It is with sadness that we acknowledge the disaster that has happened on our treasured taonga, Mauao (Mt Maunganui). We extend our aroha to those affected, none more so than the whānau of those who have lost their lives or remain missing. We also want to reach out to the emergency workers - ka nui te aroha ki a koutou katoa mai i tātou ngā iwi nō Tauranga Moana whānui. Aue te mamae, te pouri o te wā nei. Kia tangihia, kia tangihia. Out of respect for those who have departed, their whānau and our maunga we will cease our Mount Maunganui Hīkoi Walking Tour until further notice.
It is also with sadness that we have lost a grandmother and her moko (grandchild) from the community when their house was swept away near our marae and whenua in Kairua, Welcome Bay Road. All so sad! Aroha atu!
We want to acknowledge the hapori whānui and how we have all come together to tautoko all affected or involved in the rescue/recovery. No matter how much we all struggle to keep going it is heartening to see how there is still a place for humanity to exist. We include businesses who have supported the efforts in so many ways.

Cross Cultural Exchange between Tangata Moemoea Rangatahi from Australia to Aotearoa, New Zealand September 2024

Travel Ed in collaboration with Tourism BOP and Kohutapu Lodge joined with other Māori tourism operators to host the inaugural Native Nations programme bringing indigenous youth together to experience each others customs, history and cultures.The tāngata moemoea from Australia showed their respect at Pukehinahina (Gate Pā) by performing a traditional aboriginal dance to demonstrate their struggles that connected with what happened at this battle site.
